We recieved a call from the organizers of the Acle Winter Beer Festival with a request for some t shirt printing at short notice. Well if we have the time and it’s straight forward then we usually won’t refuse!
This was a one colour design with pretty simple lines and curves and a small requirement of 15 t-shirts.
With this in mind for a quick turnaround, vinyl prints offered simplest solution.
Vinyls can be supplied in one colour rolls and then cut to the design using a CAD cutting plotter. The excess on the material is then weeded away, leaving the design as a transfer – ready to apply to the shirt.
This is a simple way of explaining it but sometimes the details behind the artwork aren’t as straightforward as it looks on the surface.
Making a vinyl transfer for print needs artwork to be in a vector format where usually the art can be transformed into outlines with just a few clicks. Fonts and basic shapes are usually a go to on making vinyl t shirts because they require very little setup.
Once everything it made into a hairline outline then the cutter can follow the lines and make the cuts as smoothly as possible.
The original file of this artwork however had been made from lines of various widths. So it would need some work to get it print ready.
As you can see the lines crossed over with each other which means that there would be no connected cut line, making the final transfer more difficult to weed.
Using Corel Draw we turned everything to a hairline and then selected individuals lines and one by one welding them into one shape. This creates artwork which the cutter can easily follow.
Once all the lines had been edited and connected together – we are ready to send the artwork to the cutter and create the transfers – a bit of weeding later and the heat press is fired up ready to apply the transfers to the t shirts.
We used Fruit of the Loom Iconic 165 tees which have a soft hand feel and work quite well as a promotional t shirt with a vinyl print.
And there you have the final result. Another printed t shirt for a local event.
